An Anecdote
From time to time people have wondered why reading is important. There seems so many other things to do with one's time. Reading is important for a variety of reasons. We will look at some of those fundamental reasons below, but it is important to realize that struggling with vital reading skills in not a sign a low intelligence. For example, John Corcoran, who wrote The Teacher Who Couldn't Read, is a very intelligent man. He graduated from High School and College, became a popular High School teacher and later a successful business man all without being able to read. Many highly intelligent people have struggled with reading although, when properly taught, most people can learn to read easily and quickly.

An Example

Although the water economies of a number of species of amphibians have been studied, the majority of these investigations have been interspecific in nature (Smith et al., 1998). Such studies have often sought to elucidate adaptive differences among species inhabiting different habitats (Thorson and Svihla 1943, Littleford et al. 1947, Thorson 1955, Schmid 1965, Farrell and MacMahon 1969, Ralin and Rogers 1972, Gillis 1979). Comparable adaptive differences may also occur between developmental stages of a single species, especially when these stages occur in different environments. However, correlations between developmental stage and ecophysiological parameters have been relatively unstudied.
A Quotation
"Ground rules for conversation between reporters and sources come in commonly accepted categories: 'On the record' means that everything said can be used, and the speaker can be quoted by name.
An Analogy
"If you want my final opinion on the mystery of life and all that, I can give it to you in a nutshell. The universe is like a safe to which there is a combination. But the combination is locked up in the safe."
(Peter De Vries, Let Me Count the Ways. Little Brown, 1965)
A Question
‘We want to show what it’s really like having an admissions interview at Oxford, as they are such a unique and important part of our admissions process,’ says Mike Nicholson, Director of Undergraduate Admissions. ‘The interviews are designed to assess academic ability and potential. While this sounds intimidating, their aim is to get candidates to use their knowledge and apply their minds to new problems while allowing them to shine.

A Definition
"[T]he traditional dictionary definition, although it bears all the trappings of authority, is in fact a highly stylized, overly compressed and often tentative stab at capturing the consensus on what a particular word “means.” A good dictionary derives its reputation from careful analysis of examples of words in use, in the form of sentences, also called citations. The lexicographer looks at as many citations for each word as she can find . . . and then creates what is, in effect, a dense abstract, collapsing into a few general statements all the ways in which the word behaves. A definition is as convention-bound as a sonnet and usually more compact."
A Description
Writers commit plagiarism every time they reword sources without crediting original authors or fail to reference their sources appropriately. Plagiarism through paraphrasing can happen in two cases. First, writer may choose to substitute some words from the original with different vocabulary, rearrange words, or rearrange the whole paragraph. In this way, he or she presents stolen information expressing it with his or her own words. And second, writer may try to use exactly the same vocabulary and stylistic constructions and use them with respect to another context. Plagiarism occurs in both cases.
A Historical Background
"Sally hid her hands behind her back and crossed her fingers before she answered."
A Statement of Problem
